Annunziata Church Bell Tower

We start at the Annunziata Church Bell Tower, at the corner of Evaggelistrias and Evgeniou Voulgareos streets, in the Old Town. But don’t expect to see the church that the bell tower once belonged to. It was destroyed by German bombers in World War Two in one of Corfu’s many historical twists.

This tiny square is Vrachlioti Square but Corfiots know it simply as Pinia. The well in the middle was a source of water in the Venetian times, and you can see that it’s still a commercial hub from the shops around it. The most formal part of Venetian Corfu is found in Dimarchiou Square. The grand standalone building that dominates the square is the Old Town Hall, after which the square is named. But it has a much nobler past.
